OPEN GYM TRAINING: HOW TO TRAIN WITHOUT A COACH WATCHING YOU
STOP GUESSING. START TRAINING WITH STRUCTURE.
Open gym training sounds simple. You show up, you have the space, you have the equipment, and nobody is telling you what to do. That freedom is the good part. It is also the problem. Because when there is no class, no coach, and no whiteboard plan, most people do the same thing: they scroll, guess, copy a random WOD, and hope it makes sense.
WHY OPEN GYM TRAINING GOES WRONG
I have trained long enough to know this: most people do not waste open gym time because they are lazy. They waste it because they do not have a system. They walk in with good intentions. They want to train hard. They want to get stronger, fitter, and more athletic. But then the question hits: “What should I do today?” That question kills momentum. You start checking Instagram, looking at old WODs, asking friends, or making something up. Sometimes you get a good session. Sometimes you just get tired. Tired is not the same as progress.
WHAT OPEN GYM TRAINING SHOULD INCLUDE
A good open gym session needs structure. Not complexity. Structure. Most solid CrossFit-style sessions should include:- Warm-up
- Strength or skill work
- Conditioning
- Accessories
- Cooldown
- Notes or scaling guidance

DO NOT JUST CHASE RANDOM WODS
Random WODs are fun sometimes. But if every workout is random, your training has no direction. You might repeat the same movement patterns too often. You might avoid weaknesses. You might miss strength work. You might destroy your legs three days in a row and wonder why performance drops. Good training has intent. One day may push strength. Another day may target conditioning. Another may build skill, pacing, or accessory strength. The point is not to survive every session. The point is to build forward. Random WODs make you tired. Structured training helps you progress.HOW TO TRAIN WITHOUT A COACH
Training alone means you need to be honest. You need to choose the right load, respect the time cap, scale movements properly, and understand the workout stimulus. Ask yourself:- What is the goal of today’s session?
- Is this strength, conditioning, skill, or mixed work?
- Can I move well at this weight?
- Do I need to scale reps, load, time, or movement difficulty?
- Will this help my week of training or just wreck me?
SCALE WITHOUT EGO
Scaling is not failure. Scaling is how you keep the workout effective. If the workout is meant to be fast and you choose a weight that makes you stop every few reps, you missed the goal. If the workout is meant to build strength and you go too light just to finish quickly, you missed the goal again. Open gym athletes need to understand this: the best version of the workout is the one that gives you the right stimulus for your level.
